South Korean diplomatic missions

Prior to joining the United Nations in 1991, North and South Korea competed against each other for recognition in the developing world. In the 1980s the Roh Tae-woo government gradually initiated diplomatic links with the Soviet block, in a policy known as Nordpolitik, leading to the opening of representative offices and later embassies in socialist regimes in Europe and Asia. The Asian economic crisis of the late 1990s and an export-orientated trade policy led to South Korea to rationalise its diplomatic network.
