South High School is a public high school in Torrance, California. South High School is one of five high schools in the Torrance Unified School District.

South High School opened in September, 1957. The site is 44.45 acres. Additions in 1960, 1967, 1991, 1996, 1997. Brick construction, 231,116 sq. ft. Opened on Torrance High School campus due to construction delays; moved to new campus in January, 1958, 20 buildings, 106 classrooms. Construction cost: $6,293,000. Currently serves children south of Sepulveda, west of Hawthorne and south of Lomita boulevard. Once served all area south of Sepulveda. Overpass built in 1960 over Pacific Coast Highway.

Calle Mayor Middle School is built adjacent to the school. Although the main entrance is located on Calle Mayor, a gate at the northeast section of the football field connects the two schools. Eighth grade students attending classes at South High from Calle Mayor use this gate daily.

Since 2004, South High has been under refurbishment. Renovations include improved handicapped accessibility, improved lighting, and new signage. As well as an inability to monitor any other problems and money pits the renovations have created.

The school is often listed in the Los Angeles Times and other media as "South Torrance."

  • American Beauty was filmed on the South High School campus during the winter break of 1998/1999. Many contemporary South High students were featured as extras in the scenes set on campus.
  • Michael Alvarez, English teacher, has a long acting history. His most famous commercial appearance was on TBS with "The Mailman", Karl Malone. His brother, Karl Alvarez, is the lead bass guitar player for Descendents.
  • Marshall Draper was a former Athletics Director. He was an FBI Agent for 12 years, and then started to coach college basketball. He began instructing athletics at South High as a break from coaching. He left South to coach college basketball in Minnesota.
