South Carolina Democratic Party

The South Carolina Democratic Party is the South Carolina affiliate of the national Democratic Party. Its chairman is Joe Erwin.
Prior to the 2006 state elections, the South Carolina Democratic Party holds 2 of 9 state offices, 50 of 124 seats in the House of Representatives, and 20 of 46 seats in the Senate. Statewide elected officials are:
- Inez Tenebaum, Superintendent of Education, retiring
- Grady L. Patterson, Jr., Treasurer
- John M. Spratt, Jr., Congressman of the 5th congressional district
- James E. Clyburn, Congressman of the 6th congressional district
As of 2006, the state party officers are:

The Democratic candidates running for statewide offices include:

The 2006 Election experienced one of the most unprecedented elections in South Carolina history in several statewide and local offices. Both the elections of the Lt. Governor and Superintendent of Education required a recount. After the recounts Robert Barber conceded the office of Lt. Governor and Jim Rex won the office of Superintendent of Education.

South Carolina will host the first Democratic Primary in the South on January 29, 2008.
