South Canaan Township is a township in Wayne County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,666 at the 2000 census.

South Canaan is home to Saint Tikhon's Orthodox Theological Seminary.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 72.9 km² (28.2 mi²). 71.5 km² (27.6 mi²) of it is land and 1.4 km² (0.5 mi²) of it (1.92%) is water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 1,666 people, 610 households, and 461 families residing in the township. The population density was 23.3/km² (60.3/mi²). There were 742 housing units at an average density of 10.4/km² (26.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the township was 98.62% White, 0.24% Asian, and 1.14% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.90% of the population.

There were 610 households out of which 33.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.1% were married couples living together, 6.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.3% were non-families. 20.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.08.

In the township the population was spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 105.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 103.3 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $33,177, and the median income for a family was $40,170. Males had a median income of $26,484 versus $22,400 for females. The per capita income for the township was $16,706. About 10.6% of families and 12.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.8% of those under age 18 and 5.8% of those age 65 or over.
