South Bay, Florida

South Bay is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,859 at the 2000 census. As of 2004, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau is 4,037 [1].
Located in Western Palm Beach County, South Bay has maintained its small town appeal in one of the nation's booming areas. From 1980 to 1990, Palm Beach County increased in population by an average of five percent a year, ranking it as the third fastest growing major metropolitan area in the U.S. during the decade.
While the current estimates place South Bay's population in the incorporated city limits at more than 4,000 people, surrounding areas increase the population figures to 54,000 people in a 25-mile radius and more than 1.4 million in a 50-mile radius.
Two major roads, East-West State Road 80 and North-South U.S. 27 intersect in the town.

South Bay is located at GR1, near the southern bank of Lake Okeechobee.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 3,859 people, 805 households, and 644 families residing in the city. The population density was 549.8/km² (1,425.4/mi²). There were 935 housing units at an average density of 133.2/km² (345.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 24.23% White, 66.93% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 5.83% from other races, and 2.44% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 19.56% of the population.
There were 805 households out of which 41.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.5% were married couples living together, 32.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.0% were non-families. 15.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.39 and the average family size was 3.76.
In the city the population was spread out with 27.0% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 37.3% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 6.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 172.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 210.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $23,558, and the median income for a family was $26,944. Males had a median income of $21,087 versus $22,321 for females. The per capita income for the city was $9,126. About 29.2% of families and 36.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 48.4% of those under age 18 and 27.4% of those age 65 or over.
