South American Jaguars
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The South American Jaguars was an international rugby union team consisting of South American players that played during the early 1980s against the South African Springboks. South Africa invited South America to tour there as a way to counteract its sporting isolation which was due to the country's apartheid policies. The team was mainly made up of Argentinians but also included players from Uruguay and Chile. In all, eight matches were played of which seven were won by the Springboks and one was won by the Jaguars. The Jaguars played eight international matches against South Africa — on all occasions captained by Hugo Porta of Argentina — losing seven of these but earning one famous victory at Bloemfontein in 1982.
