Soul Mining was The The's second album, released in 1983 and included the UK hit singles: "Uncertain Smile" which had reached No. 68 in December 1982 and "This Is the Day" which made No. 71 in September 1983. "Uncertain Smile" featured the piano playing of Jools Holland. The original cassette version of the album featured five (not six, as claimed on the cassette cover) additional songs not available on the vinyl version, nor subsequent CD versions. The cover artwork is by Andy Johnson, Matt Johnson's brother.
