Prince Norodom Ranariddh is ousted as leader of Cambodia's royalist Funcinpec party.
Haze from land-clearing fires on Borneo blankets parts of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and south Thailand. In Singapore (pictured) it hits the unhealthy stage for the first time in years.
Typhoon Xangsane hits the Philippines, including Manila, and Vietnam, where it struck Danang. More than 160 people are killed and thousands of homes are submerged in flooding or destroyed.
Malaysia opens its national space center, the first in Southeast Asia.
Myanmar reconvenes its constitutional convention, chaired by the military-led State Peace and Development Council, and without participation by the National League for Democracy.
Gen. Surayud Chulanont is appointed to lead an interim civilian government by the Council for National Security following the recent coup by the military.
