Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary is an icon of the Virgin Mary with her Immaculate Heart pierced by seven swords (which represent the seven sorrows of Mary).

According to legend, a nun was clearing out junk in an attic when she came upon a pornographic portrait. When she threw the image in the fire (symbolizing purification), the image miraculously transformed into the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Another legend states that Jesus himself asked a privleged soul to paint the image, stating that "My Mother has earned the title 'Sorrowful', which I want added before the 'Immaculate', for her Heart shared in my sorrows, sufferings, and immolations in life and at Calvary at the foot of the Cross." Because of these words, some Catholics consider the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary to have a special reference to the Co-Redemptrix.

The Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary combines the Eastern and Western styles of art, which leads some Catholics to believe that the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary will one day bring about Christian unity.
