[edit] A note
Since I am leaving and the Catullus articles have already caused quite a bit of controversy, I think I should make an article defending them so that I can participate vicariously in AfD discussions and the like.
First, Catullus's poetry needs to be on Wikipedia in some form. It is highly influential and extraordinarily well-crafted. Moreover, it provides a personal view into the poorly documented (compared with other periods in history) era of the late roman republic. I think that Wikipedia benefits from having some short, notable samples included, so long as there is plenty of other information included in the article. Out of the 106 poems and scraps we have of C.'s poetry, there are currently sixteen that have articles. Of those, some (like poem 64, I think) will probably be found to be not notable enough to be included as one of the examples.
Second, I do not think that the translations are original research. There is no mention made of translations on the page (as of now). Literal translation is not an analysis; most of the other translations available in the public domain are not literal and therefore include analysis. Most of them are censored and have other flaws (especially glaring are those of VRoma.org) as well. Also, Catullus's Latin is relatively simple and well-known. Any Latin student with a basic grasp of grammar and vocabulary can verify that the translations on here are correct.
Third, even if the community does determine that they fall under the category of original research, I still think they should be included. "Wikipedia does not have firm rules" is one of thefive pillars. In this case, following a rule (if the rule does indeed apply) would damage the quality of the encyclopedia. Any encyclopedia that allows massive amounts of articles on Pokemon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pokemon#See_also) and every movie ever filmed but removes some of the greatest poetry ever written because of an ambiguous (at best) policy is very flawed.
Fourth, the model I have in mind (information, translation, etc) is something like the one on Catullus 16. I don't think the other poem articles are there yet, so please judge them for their potential (which I will try to make actuality on my return) rather than on their current state.
So, if any AfD on Catullus poetry (with the exception of c.64) do come up, I vote strongest possible keep and I reccomend others to do the same. I will see you all June 1. Sophy's Duckling 02:17, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
