Sopwith Salamander

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sopwith Salamander TF2 was a British World War I ground attack aircraft. It was a derivative of the Sopwith Snipe, and was first built in 1918 by the Sopwith Aviation Company. The TF stood for Trench Fighter, and it was the second, following the TF1, an adapted Sopwith Camel. A total of 419 of these aircraft were built. The war ended before it could enter service, although some were sent to France for testing. The Salamander was equipped for ground attack by adding armour to the fuselage for the dangerous role of trench strafing.
