Sophomore

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sophomore is a US English idiomatic term used to describe a second effort, instance or release, predominantly (though not exclusively) used for describing a student in the second year of study (generally referring to university study). Another common use is describing a musical artist's second full length album release or a filmmaker's second film. Other uses include the description of a politician's second term in office or a sportsman's second season on a team or in a certain level or league of play.

The word is derived of the Greek word sophumer, which in turn comes from sophom, meaning "dialectic exercise", a word related to "sophistry". A false folk etymology claims it is derived from the words sophos, meaning "wise", and moros, meaning "fool". That incorrect explanation likely had an effect on the word's development. [1]
