Sophie Burton

Sophie Burton was a fictional character on the long-running Channel 4 British television soap opera Hollyoaks.

She was played by actress Connie Powney between 2003-2006. She was the daughter of Liz Burton, nemesis of Mercedes McQueen and twin sister of Mel, who was played by Connie Powney's real life sister Cassie Powney.

Sophie Burton arrived in Hollyoaks in 2003 as the identical twin sister of Mel Burton. Although they looked almost exactly the same in appearance, they had very different personalities. Unlike Mel, Sophie was quiet and introverted.

Sophie took on a beauty course at Hollyoaks Community College and resided with her mum Liz, brother Justin, new stepfather Richard Taylor and stepsiblings Ali and Darlene.

Sophie's on/off romance with Sam Owen proved to be life changing. Unbeknownst to Sophie, Sam had recently started date raping girls after prompting from his friend Andy Holt. At Christmas 2005, Andy targeted the Burton sisters as his next date rape victims. After getting himself an invite to the Burton house and spiking both girls' drinks with GHB, Andy offered an unconscious Sophie to Sam. Although Sam was tempted due to his strong feelings for Sophie, he found himself unable to go through with the rape because he didn't want to hurt the girl he loved. Although Sophie escaped a sexual attack that night, Mel was raped by Andy.

The next morning, when Sam and Andy had long since fled, Sophie and Mel recovered from the drowziness of being drugged and pieced together what had happened to them. They both went to the police claiming to have been raped by Andy, although tests proved that Sophie had not undergone any sort of sexual abuse. The fact that Mel was raped when Sophie wasn't caused some friction between the sisters. Also, Sophie was unaware that Sam had been involved in the date rape scenario.

Sam eventually confessed to Sophie that he had been involved in Andy's date rape attacks. Sophie was determined to get her revenge on Sam, but rather than admit this she tricked him into thinking that she had forgiven him. Sophie played along with Sam's plans long enough for her to convince him to turn himself in to the police. Sophie then got her revenge when she told an arrested Sam that she hadn't forgiven him and wouldn't visit him as she had promised.

Sophie was hired as an assistant for Sean Kennedy's beauty salon Evissa. She was briefly sacked after false allegations made by Mercedes McQueen that Sophie had injured her during a treatment, but she has now been reinstated.

Sophie, along with Mel, moved in with her friend Louise Summers after a brief spell of being homeless when Liz left Hollyoaks and sold the Burton house.

When Sam escaped from prison, Sophie was afraid that he would return to exact his revenge.

Sophie died on September 8th due to breathing in too much smoke after an explosion and fire in the Dog in the Pond. She died in the local church in Russ's arms. The explosion was carried out by Sam who meant to kill Sophie in the explosion.
