Sophia Lamar (born Enrique Muñoz on June 6) is a transsexual nightlife celebrity, former Club Kid, model, and actress based in New York City. She emigrated from Castro's Cuba in 1980 after leaving her mark on its underground scene.
Lamar first developed a name for herself in San Francisco's club and art scene, producing shows such as Sophia: A Trip to Her Ego in which sprouted a fountain of her own collected urine. Quickly outgrowing San Francisco, she headed for New York City where she was introduced to Michael Alig and played an integral part in Disco 2000.
In 2001, Lamar and Amanda Lepore (also a transsexual) successfully sued the nightclub Twilo for gender discrimination after they were replaced by genetic women. The case was settled before it came to trial.
Later, at the forefront of Brooklyn's electroclash scene at Club Luxx, she hosted the revolutionary party "Mutants." It was there she would introduce herself as "your hostess not by choice, but by demand." She collaborated with Larry Tee and Phiiliip to produce a number of electro-esque tracks that have become familiar both on the dancefloors and runways.
Lamar has also modelled, appearing in campaigns for companies including Levi's, Trash & Vaudville and even the NYU School of Medicine Center for AIDS Research. She has also appereared in numerous international publications, in which she has been shot by renowned photographers. Interview magazine in 2004 named her one of the "10 to watch" and praised her for shaping her own destiny in the spirit of Andy Warhol.
Lamar has also graced off-Broadway stages and is a regular participant in New York's Fringe Festival; her performance has been described by American Theatre Review as "glorious." In addition to theatre, Lamar is a regular in Ned Ambler's films and frequently works with directors like Todd Verow, Craig Cobb and other independent film auteurs.
Lamar can currently be heard on Jonny McGovern's "Gay Pimpin' with Jonny McGovern" podcast each week (through which a younger generation has discovered her), declaring what she hates. She also frequents the Misshapes dance party in New York City.
