Sons of the Desert was an American country music band hailing from the state of Texas.
The group, deriving its name from the Laurel and Hardy movie of the same name, was founded in 1989 by a group of students attending McLennan Community College in Waco, Texas.[1]
Sons of the Desert's first album, Whatever Comes First, was released on Epic Records in 1997. The album's lead-off single, which was the title track, reached the Top 10 later that year, but the subsequent songs were less successful. In late 1998, Sons of the Desert landed its first #1, singing backup on Ty Herndon's "It Must Be Love"; however, the song was not on any of the Sons' albums.
After discovering a song called "Goodbye Earl", the group started to perform that song in concert. They wanted to put the song on their sophomore album; however, the song was pitched to the Dixie Chicks instead, who recorded it, and the Sons' second album for Epic was later shelved. Sons of the Desert left Epic, and later signed with MCA Records, on which they recorded their sophomore album, Change, in 2000.[2] This second album did not produce any major hits, although the group did sing harmony on Lee Ann Womack's #1 hit, "I Hope You Dance" in 2000.
Sons of the Desert have disbanded. Drew has pursued a solo career; however, the status of the other members is currently unknown.
