Sonipat (Hindi: सोनीपत) is an ancient town and a municipal council in Sonipat District in the state of Haryana, India. it was founded as Soneprastha by the five Pandava brothers during the times of Mahabharata.[citation needed]

As of 2001 India census,GRIndia Sonipat had a population of 216,213. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Sonipat has an average literacy rate of 72%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 77%, and female literacy is 66%. In Sonipat, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.
