SonicWALL is a company which provides hardware devices for Internet security and unified threat management, including firewalls, VPN, backup devices and content filtering systems.

[edit] Content filtering system

The SonicWALL content filter is a simple hardware-based solution for schools, libraries and companies to block websites based on keywords such as games and sex. The system works by querying a database hosted by SonicWALL for a requested domain. The site will then either be blocked, or allowed depending on what categories have been blocked on the device.

The filter has been known to incorrectly categorise sites as "violence/hate/racism" or "pornography" [1], [2], including the site Consumerist [3]. It is possible to check a sites rating, and then change it if required by going on to the SonicWALL website.

Panera Bread is known to use SonicWALL in tandem with their free wifi access [4], [5].
