Sonat, Inc. was an American energy holding company, primarily involved in natural gas, oil and electric exploration and production. The company was headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama and was acquired by El Paso Corporation in 1999, after "major divestments" to maintain competition in the natural gas markets. At the time of the merger Sonat was a Fortune 500 company and was listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol SNT. It is now a division of El Paso. The company spun-off its offshore drilling unit as Sonat Offshore in the early 1990's. Southern Natural Gas is still headquarted in Birmingham in the Regions Center, previously called the AmSouth-Sonat Tower, and later the AmSouth Center .
