The character of Sonar is depicted into widely different ways, the first is his original toyline depiction and the second version is in a comic released by 3H Enterprises some time afterwards.
In the toyline Sonar is clearly described as a clone (fans therorize of Onyx Primal (who is a repaint of the bat version of pre-Beast Wars Optimus Primal and who sometimes depicted as a clone of Primal also), created and altered by the Predacon Megatron. Despite Sonar's origins, the transmetal II joined the Maximals and takes the beast form of a bat. Sonar performs reconnaissance for the Maximals and is considered their early warning system. Highly unpredictable, making Sonar a dangerous enemy and an uneasy ally to have.
[edit] Animated series
Presumably Sonar's stasis pod was among those who were launched into orbit around prehistoric Earth in the series pilot.
[edit] IDW Publishing
Sonar appeared appeared among the Maximal protoforms awakened in the 2006 IDW comics Beast Wars: The Gathering series. Sonar appeared among a flock of Maximal flyers along with Air Hammer, Nightglider and Prowl. Sonar's gender was not defined in this series, being only a minor background character.
[edit] 3H Enterprises
In the Transformer comics written by BotCon, Sonar is portrayed as being female because the writers wanted more female characters. The comic does not specify for certain if Sonar is or is not a clone in the story. Sonar joins Primal Prime and the Wreckers on Cybertron and was killed in the explosion of the rear portion of the Wrecker's ship.
The actual text of the Tech Spec for Sonar lacks any male of female pronouns, leaving open the interpertation of Sonar's gender, something the writers at 3H Enterprises took advantage of in making the character female. [1]

Sonar is the name of a Mini-Con who turns into a radar jet. He is a member of the Air Defense and Air Asssault teams, and combines with his companions Jetstorm and Runway to for the Star Saber.
In 2003 a redeco of the Air Defense Team was released called the Air Assault Team. Dreamwave comics explained that the Air Assault Team are the evil personalities the team takes on when their Star Saber form is wielded by a powerful evil character like Megatron, transforming the team into their evil personas.
The toy of Sonar was recolored into Shuttler in Japan and remolded into Skyboom for the Energon line.
Sonar was also the Japanese name for the Mini-Con called Comettor.
[edit] Dreamwave Productions
Sonar appeared in the Dreamwave Summer Special. Now in command of the Decepticons, Megatron sends Snowcat, Slugslinger and Sharkticon each on missions to steal copies of the plans for Omega Supreme from the Autobot's Ocean City. Sharkticon was overpowered by underwater defenders and then tossed out by Kicker and the Mini-Cons Jetstorm, Runway and Sonar. Each of the three made up stories to Megatron as to why they failed.
Dreamwave's More Than Meets The Eye series gave Sonar much needed character, describing him as the most level headed of the group. He also tends to agree with whatever Runway says. He also has the most advanced sensor capabilities of his team.
[edit] 3H Enterprises
Although no toy named Sonar was produced for the Transformers: Universe line, there was one very minor cameo in it's fiction. In the 2003 BotCon voice actor play, Armada Megatron appeared who was wielding the Dark Saber, of which Armada Sonar was a member.
