[edit] Plot synopsis

In this episode, Cartman decides to make a boy band as a way to collect $10,000,000. He, Stan, Kyle, Kenny and Wendy (the best fifth member they could find, who agrees to dress like a boy) make a band called "Fingerbang", which Cartman believes refers to the action of pretending one's hand is a gun, although only Kenny appears to know the correct definition. The boys and Wendy then attempt to get a gig at the mall, and go through some trouble in the form of two ornery mall security guards.

Meanwhile, Stan's father freaks out when he discovers what Stan is up to, and without explanation forbids him from doing it. It is eventually revealed that he had once been in a boy band and had been wildly successful until the band was replaced. He lost all his money, fame and girlfriends. Eventually, though, he agrees to let Stan play, deciding that his son would have to make his own mistakes in order to learn; the two rush to the mall for the gig, which is late and threatens to be canceled.

The two arrive in time, but shortly after this point Kenny has died (having been crushed by an elevator). Without a fifth member they seemed doomed, until Stan's father steps in to replace Kenny. They do their song, and then afterwards, inexplicably decide that the "fame" they receive is too much and quit their job.

[edit] Censorship

  • In syndication, the shot of Cartman's mom urinating in the cup during the clip of the bondage movie that was on Cartman's audition tape is removed.

[edit] Lyrics of Wendy's Song

The following lyrics contain double entendres, as, at the end of each verse, the listener expects to hear an obscene word, whilst in the following verse, Wendy sings a word that is phonetically similar, but not obscene, to the one which is expected (which is why Parker and Stone say that this was the first time they could get away with saying the word "cunt").

[edit] Trivia

  • The boy who played the little piano during the auditions is probably a parody of Schroeder from Peanuts.
  • The mall manager is played by Marcus Vaughn who is a friend of Trey Parker and Matt Stone and appeared in Parker's film Orgazmo as a stunt cock.
  • "Fingerbang" was going to be the name of Trey Parker and Matt Stone's band. They admitted they thought this was a good idea for about a day. Somewhere in time, they settled on the pornography-derived name, DVDA.
  • In this episode's commentary, the creators remarked this was the first episode where they really started to use the method of "straight-storytelling." Before this, almost all episodes had A-stories, B-stories, C-stories, etc. that would all come together in the end. In this episode, the creators said they learned that an episode can be about just one thing, with character's side stories all reacting to the main idea.
  • Randy's fit of rage, ending in him smashing the glass doors of the living room cabinet and shouting "No! Nooo!!" is very similar to a scene in Star Trek: First Contact, where Captain Picard does the same. In fact, Randy's voice changes from Parker's to a sampling of Patrick Stewart's voice from the film.
  • This episode marks the first of two instances when the show has used the word "cunt" (Wendy's audition). The other time will be on the episode "Raisins."
  • When Stan and his dad are sitting in the bedroom talking, the picture behind them shows a bridge that has an alien instead of its support.
  • While it seems that the auditioning scene is a parody, it actually precedes the original airing of American Idol by about two years.
  • When Fingerbang is playing at the mall, you can barely hear Wendy's voice.
  • During Randy's flashback, the manager of his band closely resembles Spider-Man's J. Jonah Jameson.
