"Something Smells" is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from Season two.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Brief summary: SpongeBob's got terrible onion-peanut sundae breath, yet he can't understand why he's being avoided. Patrick says it's a beauty issue. So when Patrick eats some of the sundae and people avoid him, too, he's convinced he's caught "The Ugly" from SpongeBob.

SpongeBob SquarePants and Gary The Snail wake up and realize that it's Sunday. Therefore, SpongeBob decides to have a sundae, but when he looks in the freezer, there is no ice cream left. So, SpongeBob decides to use something else. He uses onions, ketchup, and peanuts from the peanut plant he has been growing in the bathroom window. Little does he know, SpongeBob gets rancid breath. SpongeBob then gets out his Sunday list. It says: "Say hi to everyone in Bikini Bottom." Everyone in town avoids him because of his bad breath. He approaches a giant pile of bubble gum sitting on a bench. It then morphs into the body of Patrick Star. SpongeBob tells him that he is confused, and Patrick doesn't notice the stench since he doesn't have a nose. He says that everyone's avoiding SpongeBob because SpongeBob is ugly, and SpongeBob looks in a mirror. It looks okay, but when SpongeBob says "Hi!", the reflection smells his breath, readies a hammer and smashes itself. SpongeBob is shocked by this, and isolates himself in his home. Then, Patrick comes in and makes SpongeBob admit that he is ugly and proud of it. It works, and SpongeBob's confidence grows, so they go to the cinema. When they go in and sit down, all the fish still avoid SpongeBob. All of the fish leave the theatre. Patrick eventually gets hungry so they go to get a snack, but no-one is at the counter, so SpongeBob gives Patrick some of his sundae. When a guy runs away from Patrick, he thinks he has caught the 'ugly' from SpongeBob. SpongeBob smells Patrick's extremely smelly breath, and comes to the conclusion that they're not ugly, they just have bad breath from eating the "sundae". After they realize this, they run around shouting "WE STINK!" and they melt down the movie theater. In the last scene, SpongeBob and Patrick run into Squidward Tentacles and say, "Guess what Squidward? WE STINK!" Squidward looks confused and SpongeBob and Patrick run away laughing.

  • When SpongeBob realises he is ugly, he hides at home playing a pipe organ and wearing a mask (Groucho Marx) a parody of Phantom of the Opera.

  • After SpongeBob finishes his sundae, he says "You know what they say Gary...I'm easy like Sunday morning." This is a reference to the song Easy (Like Sunday Morning) by the Commodores.
  • When SpongeBob fetches the ketchup for his sundae, the bottle spells "Katsup" (A misspelling of catsup, an old word for ketchup rarely used today).
  • Patrick tells a parody of 'The Ugly Duckling', that goes like this: "Once there was an Ugly Barnacle. He was so ugly that everyone died! The end."

  • In the beginnning of the episode, SpongeBob says "Pat, your genius is showing!" Patrick covers up his privates, saying "Where??" while sweating. This means that Patrick misheard SpongeBob, and thought he said "Pat, your penis is showing!"
  • When SpongeBob is blown onto the calendar, he is stuck between the 18 and 19th of the month. Yet when we see him in close-up, he is stuck on the 20th of the month. Also, the 20th day of the month is on the outer side of the calendar, so Monday could not be beside Sunday on the calendar (Monday should be the first square on the next line).
  • The episode was slightly altered on the DVD releases. On the original TV version, SpongeBob walks up to a building and says "Hi, building!" which causes the building to flee from SpongeBob's breath. He goes up to Patrick and says "I just don't get it!" and Patrick says "I don't either." On the Season 2 DVD release, and the YTV version, the scene goes like this:
SpongeBob: (walks up to a building and waves) I just don't get it! (the building flees)
Patrick: I don't either. (SpongeBob walks up to Patrick; the rest of the scene goes as normal, resulting in the same lines being repeated)
  • In the DVD commentary for this episode, they mention that Squidward had a line at the end of the episode. When SpongeBob and Patrick hug him and run away, he would say "Ugly and smelly, two for one."
  • It is confirmed in this episode that Patrick doesn't have a nose (like in Missing Identity when Patrick said he wanted a nose), which is also why he couldn't tell that SpongeBob had bad breath. But in Wet Painters, Patrick has a nose (or a hole, as Patrick only has one nose opening.) Also, in "Suds", Patrick puts a clothespin over where his nose would be. Also, in Wet Paint, he puts a paintbrush in his nose and pulls out tons of nose hair.
  • At the cinema, when Spongebob showed Patrick the sundae Patrick's eyebrows burned off, but then came back after.
  • This was the first episode to use digital ink and paint and computer techniques for the animation rather than transferring the characters to cels (from Help Wanted to Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy II).
