"Something's Missing" is a song by John Mayer. It is the third track from Heavier Things, Mayer's second studio album. This song is distinct from all other songs by Mayer as is the only song to have appeared on every live release Mayer has contributed to, including the live album Try!, from his group John Mayer Trio. Mayer has mentioned (even in his Grammy acceptance speech) that his song "Daughters" wasn't suitable as a single. He has mentioned that "Something's Missing" along with "Come Back To Bed", also from Heavier Things, would have been more suitable as the singles from the album, despite the success "Daughters" earned him.
[edit] The meaning of "Something's Missing"
The song is about a "gap" or a "hole". Mayer talks of the song as meaning that you can't specifically say what it is, but that "somerthing's missing".
In the song, he goes through a checklist of things that "could be" missing which are (in sequence):
- Friends
- Money
- Well Slept
- Opposite Sex
- Guitar
- Microphone.
After this, the lyrics then digress and state that the "message is waiting for me when I come home", indicating that the realisation of what is missing will return to him when he returns home.[1]
