Halley and Scarlett have been best friends for years, sharing secrets, clothes, and crushes. People know Scarlett as the popular, flamboyant one; Halley is just her quiet sidekick. Then, at the beginning of their junior year, the balance shifts. First, Scarlett's boyfriend Michael is killed in a freak accident; soon afterward, she learns that she is carrying his baby. For the first time, Scarlett really needs Halley. Their friendship may bend under the weight, but it will never break--because a true friendship is a promise you keep forever. Sarah Dessen's poignant, funny voice has earned her raves and legions of teenaged fans.

After Michael's death, Scarlett introduces Halley to his best friend, Macon Faulkner, a mysterious high school student. Drawn to him for his spontaneity and charm, Halley agrees to become his girlfriend. However, she has no idea where Macon goes, and becomes increasingly worried as he pressures her to have sex with him. She determines to agree on New Year's Day. At the last moment, she changes her mind, thus angering him. His anger causes a car accident on the way home. Even though Halley is physically hurt, Macon fails to visit her at the hospital. Halley promptly breaks up with him.

Scarlett gives birth to a beautiful baby girl whom she names "Grace Halley," after her best friend.

Halley's grandma, who she is named after, get sick, and she recalls memories of watching Halley's comet with her.

Around March Macon got kicked out of his house, Halley worried. And by Mid-April he was going out with Elizabeth Gunderson,head cheeleader. Halley cried for 2 days straight.She soons gets over it and focuses on the birth of Scarlettes baby.
