[edit] History

Underwood is one of the biggest selling American Idol contestants and her album made its debut at #2 on the Billboard 200, behind Madonna's Confessions on a Dance Floor, selling more than 315,000 copies, which are the third best first-week sales for any American Idol winner (behind Ruben Studdard's Soulful and Clay Aiken's Measure of a Man which sold over 400,000 copies and 600,000 copies, respectively, in the first week). The album debuted at number two on the Worldwide Chart. However, the album's sales kept up so well that with its 5X Platinum certification, Some Hearts is the best-selling debut album coming from any American Idol finalist, and the highest selling country debut album of the Soundscan Era. It was certified platinum 3 weeks after its release, (12/9/05) for shipments of over one million copies, double platinum 1/6/06, triple platinum on 4/28/06, quadruple platinum on 11/6/06, and was certified Quintuple Platinum as of 1/10/07. The album has sold 5.0 million copies as of March 2007. In fact, the album went on to sell over very close to 300,000 copies more than after a year of its release in just one week. Some Hearts was one of the best selling albums of 2006, and the best selling album of the Billboard year: November 14, 2005 - November 12, 2006. The official press release from Sony BMG has gone out announcing the Some Hearts album's RIAA certification for 5 million units shipped which means that the album has gone 5x platinum.

The first single off the album was "Inside Your Heaven" which debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The follow-up single, "Jesus, Take The Wheel", was #1 on the Hot Country Songs Chart for 6 consecutive weeks and reached a peak of #20 on the Hot 100. "Some Hearts" was released to pop and adult contemporary radio only and eventually reached #12 on the Adult Contemporary chart. "Don't Forget to Remember Me" was the third single from the album, and has also proved to be successful, reaching #1 on the Radio And Records Country Chart and #2 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs Chart. "Before He Cheats" has been released as the next single, and climbed up the charts faster than any of her other singles, making it into the top 20 of the Billboard Hot Country Song Chart before releasing a video. "Before He Cheats" subsequently peaked at number 1 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs for 5 consecutive weeks and has peaked at 16 on the Hot 100 Chart, proving to be a moderate crossover hit and the biggest hit overall off her debut album.

In the week of December 25, 2006, the album lept back up to number four on the Billboard 200 chart on its 58th week on the charts, showing persistent selling strength. Her album has garnered 5.0 million in US sales. Her worldwide debut album sales figures are next to Kelly Clarkson's "Breakaway" as the best-selling album of any American Idol winner or contestant, with 7 million copies worldwide.

On January 11, 2007, it was announced that Some Hearts was certified quintuple platinum, continuing its streak as the 2nd best-selling Idol album ever (behind season one winner Kelly Clarkson's sophomore album Breakaway which sold 5.7 million copies). Yet it is the best selling debut by any American Idol alumnus. The album crossed the 5 million mark in March 2007. Also, it rounded off the Top 10 in its 70th week, edging 12-10.
