Somanglish
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Somanglish is a blend of the Somali and English language words. A name used to refer to a range of language-contact phenomena, primarily in the speech of the Somali populations (mainly those generations raised outside of Somali in English language dominant countries) of the United States, Canada and the UK. This group tends to be native speakers (L1) of both English and Somali. Because this group is a blend of two different environments, during normal daily conversations they are comfortable code-switching between both languages or using blended words of both English and Somali (Somanglish).
The term Somanglish is a fairly new name commonly used informally among younger Somali generations. It has gained popularity through online settings such as blogs, emails and IMs.
