Somali National Movement

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Somali National Movement (SNM) is a political party in Somalia, in particular the de-facto state of Somaliland, of which it is a principal party. It was established in 1981 by Isaaq emigres based in London who sought to overthrow Somali dictator Siad Barre. It became one of the strongest insurgent groups in all of Somalia. The SNM vaciliated between a non-aligned foreign policy and mixed economy and pro-western policies, such as supporting United States involvement in post-Barre Somalia. It also supported representative democracy and guaranteed human rights. Eventually, the SNM declared Somaliland independent after the overthrow of Barre on 18 May 1991.
