Image talk:Somersetarms.png

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The image of the arms of Somerset has been drawn freehand. However, it is the official arms of the Somerset County Council (without the motto scroll). I claim fair use, but am unsure whether it is totally justified. Grutness...wha? 01:47, 6 August 2005 (UTC)

Not relevant to fair use, but perhaps relevant to the copyright status of the image in general: Who drew it/what is the source? Crypticfirefly 04:34, 9 September 2005 (UTC)

The image of the arms was at Flags of the World (to which I am a regular contributor), but the actual artwork was my own - I sketched it freehand rather than copying it electronically. Grutness...wha? 00:49, 18 October 2005 (UTC)
So, fair use of what, exactly? At least under U.S. law it seems to me that the copyright in this image, if any, would belong to you as the artist. The thing is, it is a heraldic image, and as such I think the "art" is pretty conventionalized-- and presumably this has been the arms of Somerset for hundreds of years . . . so to the extent that you "copied" anything (adding your own artistic interpretation), the ultimate source is probably public domain. My 2 cents, anyway. Crypticfirefly 06:13, 18 October 2005 (UTC)

The copyright of the rendering is yours. There is no heraldic law in the united states; and even if there were I don't think it's a violation of heraldic law to depict somebody's arms in an academic setting so long as you aren't claiming them to be your own. So I can't imagine that there could be any problem. Also, are you aware of the image tag Template:Coat of arms? Doops | talk 03:03, 19 December 2005 (UTC)
