Hi, saw your request for Royal Navy pictures and thought I should mention that I've tracked one down for the second HMS Colossus from 1890; due to its age it should be public domain but of course I can't upload it yet because uploads are disabled at the moment.

Surprisingly, there are quite a few public domain photos of Royal Navy ships on the US Navy history site, I found a couple of the Dreadnoughts there. - Hephaestos 17:33, 3 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Hi, you've been adding some great RN stuff! (I would do some, but I have no detailed sources :-( - what have you been using?) For the articles that get big, like HMS Colossus, it's useful to break them up by specific ship, a la HMS Warrior or the US Navy ships, that way links from battles and such can go directly to the right ship. Otherwise the reader has the disconcerting experience of clicking on a link in Battle of Jutland and seeing text on an 18th-century SOL - they may not realize that they need to click down. Also it will be quicker downloading when the pictures get added - won't get irrelevant pics. Stan 19:33, 3 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Thanks :-) Ok i'll try and do the one ship one page thing. Have to try and get used to that. Basically i've been using various sources on the net, digesting the info' and then using my own way of writing the article. I'll try and keep adding more RN stuff, hopefully my fingers won't drop off :-) Oh by the way, I was kind of perplexed by the article NAeL Minas Gerais. In this BBC link HMS Vengeance it says that it could be docked at Falmouth. It's dated 21st December 2002 so it quite new. Friends of the Vengeance Campaign kind of contradicts it as well so has anyone got any new info' on HMS Vengeance? SoLando 19:51, 3 Jan 2004 (UTC)

One of the interesting emergent properties of a bunch of interlinked Wikipedia articles is that mistakes in the source materials start showing up as inconsistencies. I don't know what the answer is in this case, but in several cases I've gotten good info by simply emailing people and asking questions, or asking for their comments on the WP article. Hi SoLando, you said you've lost your image editing CD. There's a freeware program I use for resizing or converting images. It's easy to use and does even allow batch conversions. I'd like to second Stan's appreciation for your work on the RN. I have contributed some articles on that myself, but I don't have sources for quite a lot of the older ships beyond very general knowledge. At the moment, I'm making stub articles, with the standard table for RN ships, if I've written it and if it's necessary, a link to the appropriate MediaWiki message, a link to the MediaWiki stub message, and recently, a standard text hopefully linking to the general article on the ship name.

BTW, I've done a list of RFA ships, which includes similar stub articles, and also includes data on pennant numbers, which can be very difficult to find for RFA ships. There's a site hosted by BT Internet that, whilst not updated for a couple of years, is a fantastic sources on postwar RN and especially RFA ships. There's virtually nothing else like it on the internet for RFA vessels. David Newton 21:08, 25 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Sorry about that delay. You've certainly been a prolific contributor to Wiki, i'm rather slow at it, but nevermind. It's certainly good that people are getting info' on the British armed forces onto Wiki', as a lot of sites that do have information on them are disapearing from the 'net, sadly. So Wiki' really is becoming a good source of information for the British, indeed other nations armed forces, for people wanting to find out about them. Hi. Sorry, it was a typo on the Leander-class article. It was meant to be Type 12, which were known as the Rothesay and Whitby classes. So both articles are quite correct. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. I've spent the last few days working on a new ship table template to enable us to centralise the editing of things like weapons outfits for a particular class of ships in one template (so with the Fletchers or Gearings or other big classes you only have to edit in one place to alter a mistake rather than in dozens or hundreds). Please have a look at the WikiProject Ships page's talk section and see what you think. I haven't written the instructions for using it yet, and I want to see whether there are any table cells people would like me to include that aren't present yet. I've finished my expansion of the First World War section. I feel it's much too long but am having a hard time finding ways to trim it down. I've put coverage of equipment (guns, artillery, tanks, etc.) in a separate Great War section but am not sure that it fits the structure of the article. I'll see if I can help out with the other sections, but the only useful book I have is Chandler & Beckett, so I might not be able to add much. Geoff/Gsl 05:26, 16 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I wasn't sure whether to do a "British Army in World War I" or a "Military history of the United Kingdom during World War I". However, I think there is scope for a British Army-only history to cover things that were important to the army such as changes in command, the formation and disbandment of armies and corps, and so on — stuff that's a bit too detailed for a all-encompassing military history. All finished! I went ahead and made all the parameters optional, since leaving the last ones in raw table markup seemed to cause some funny errors.

• One minor point: The new info box headers are well spaced but the info on the right is somewhat squashed up and truncated wrapping text onto the next line in an untidy way. Is it possible to widen the info box or drop the info text below the headings to use up the width more evenly?

• I agree with you that unbordered box's are better. I think the problem may lie in that the box seems split unevenly due to the length of the formal title 'Colonel of The Regiment'. He has also noted in the article on the 8th Duke of Wellington that his Post Nominals include the O.StJ. Ok, I think that "Colonel" should suffice - and hey, it's short, which matters :-) Right now, I'm now hoping Kiril (see above section ;-)) solves the modular templates inability to handle footnotes, which would provide clarification that "Colonel" in this case doesn't refer to the CO. Ah well. Regarding the Officer of the Order of St John, I have to say that I have (very) limited knowledge of peerage and the like, so I encourage you to edit on that issue. I based the template for the Crown copyright on this PDF file:

It is hosted by an organisation that is specifically devoted to informing museums and archives about copyright term lengths so I thought that it, and its companion PDFs referenced in the British copyright law article that I am largely the author of are reliable. To answer the question that you left on my talk page, then yes unpublished crown copyright photographs from 1954 or earlier are out of copyright.

This comes from the original treatment of all photographs by the Copyright Act 1911. Up until 1995 all photographs had a copyright term based on 50 years. The 1911 Act did not distinguish between published and unpublished photographs so photographs made during the time that Act was in force had a copyright term of 50 years from creation whether published or not. The Copyright Act 1956 did distinguish between published and unpublished photographs, with the former getting the 50 year term and the latter the perpetual copyright of unpublished works. In line with British legal precedent that only applied to photographs made after the commencement of the 1956 Act, ie 30 June 1957. The Copyrights Designs and Patents Act 1988 kept the 50 year term but ended the perpetual copyright protection of unpublished works, with a 50 year transitional period from commencement of the 1988 Act, ie from 1st August 1989 to 1st August 2039. Again it did not alter the status of works made before commencement in line with British legal practice, so photographs taken before 30 June 1957 still kept their 50 year copyright term whether published or unpublished.

All that changed in 1995 when the EU 'harmonized' copyright terms (despite the fact that things like French copyright law not counting the years during WWI and WWII towards the +70 years still exist). That meant that photograph copyright changed to being the same as that of other artistic works, ie life of the author plus 70 years. Importantly, unlike the 1911 Act, 1956 Act and 1988 Act the EU legislation was retrospective. The only class of works that it did not affect were Crown copyright photographs, which remain as they were, ie 50 years from creation for any photograph taken before 30 June 1957.

Hi Joel, I noticed too and was in the process of resolving it. I've seen the photo in Keegan's The Face of Battle (where he reckons it is August-September 1914) and in a 1915 issue of The War Illustrated (where I scanned it from) but in neither of those places was the unit identified. So I posted a question to the Great War forums and the response I had is that they are 4th Battalion, King's Liverpools and that, despite the un-trench like setting, it is 1915. Apparently the photo is featured in King’s Regiment Museum in the Museum of Liverpool Life so there might be more information there.

Certainly your image name is more accurate than mine so mine should be the one deleted. If we wait for more information, it might be possible to come up with a still better name.

I'm not sure which image is better. Mine was scanned from 90-year old newsprint, is lower resolution, and is banded from the lines of text on the other side of the page, but I feel it is slightly sharper in the foreground (though not sharper in the background). They are both cropped slightly differently. Wherever they are eventually placed, I would upload the one that won't be used first, and upload the other over it so that both are in the history. Your sharpened image is clearly the best. I think the resolution of the firstworldwar.com image is needlessly high. Perhaps something around 1000 pixels wide is enough (though of course, I would include the full size scan in the image history.)

If indeed it is the 4th King's, they joined the Sirhind Brigade on 6 March 1915 and the photo was first published in May 1915, so that places the action, if it was in battle, at Neuve Chapelle, or possibly Aubers Ridge. I think a title like "4th_Battalion_Kings_Regiment_1915.jpg" would be good enough unless you want to wait to gather more information. I don't know what we can do, other than keep an eye out on all our watchlists. But something like 70% of articles are unwatched (see Special:Unwatchedpages) so it's something of a lost cause. AFD is far too large to keep an eye on, and I stopped once I found that it was dragging me down into a mire of bad-faith. The deletion reform can't come soon enough. I just hope that the deletionist tendency doesn't have its way and that the work-in-progress articles will be allowed to continue. I like an idea that Kirill had on the mailing list of assigning deletion to the projects, it means that you've more chance of getting informed comment. Leithp 08:37, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

Ah, my Horrocks project seems to have pretty much stalled. I need to add an awful lot of content about Market Garden, which I have a very sketchy knowledge of and some stuff about his time in Russia. My stuff about Russia is a series of anecdotes which I've no idea how to put into a coherent form. The whole article reads like a work in progress and I think needs serious copyediting as well as a lot more work before I can put it forward for peer review or as a FAC. A very good idea over on m:Association of Inclusionist Wikipedians is to have a Wiki(pedia) Recycle Bin, where threatened or deleted articles can get a second chance. Proof further that if you have a good idea, chances are someone has already thought of it. We need to support it...or if it does'nt take off and we cant find/come up with a better one, nick it and claim it for our own :>

One of the things I like about my M8, O'Connor is, he was a very prolific writer of letters, memos, orders, suggestions...you name it. Everything but his memoirs. Horrocks, on the other hand, wrote a very good autobiography, but did'nt seem to leave as much of a paper trail otherwise. This makes him a lot more friendly to the casual reader but a formidable foe for the serious researcher (hello:). Now that I have gotten reinforcements for La Grande Armee, I might be able to shift some forces your way to help out with Market Garden and on the Maruth line. The autobiography is a very well written and interesting book, but it was written twenty years after the events. The two biographys I have basically use it as their only source, apparently because Horrocks' memory had become faulty and he'd destroyed all his notes when moving house (why would you do that?!?). By re-telling the stories so many times he couldn't remember the events any more, just the anecdotes. He co-wrote a book called "Corps Commander", which goes into more detail about Market Garden. I'm planning to use this to expand the section, but it retreads a lot of the ground of the autobiography. Having said all this, the main reason it hasn't been expanded is that I'm too lazy to do it.

On a different subject, can either of you two go over and take a look at Arthur Ernest Percival? Nickhk has totally re-written it (it was an embarassment before) and it looks extremely comprehensive to me. It might be a good FAC. Leithp 08:48, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

I'd prefer if there was more detail on his early life in WWI, and the intro' should be expanded. Also, Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel of the Cheshire Regiment in 1959? What the hell!? Was it an honory position, or did he actually command a battalion? That does need clarifying. And perhaps some mention should be made of Brig. I'm honoured :-) Well, I believe that there is really only one major field omitted from Infobox Military Unit: "Colonel of the Regiment", informally known as "Honorary Colonel" (or though that is, apparently, inaccurate, but meh!). An "Alliances" parameter might be useful, though one regiment can hold many alliances (see Royal Anglian Regiment for an example), but that can be circumvented by creating a section in the article. Maybe a Freedom(s) (of the city) field? Other than that, I believe that the transition from Infobox:British Army regiment to Infobox Military Unit would be seamless :-) SoLando (Talk) 02:31, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

The "Ceremonial chief" parameter would be better retained for "Colonel-in-Chief", a position usually reserved for a member of the royal family. I've just updated the info box on the Duke of Wellington's Regiment page with the Current Commanding officer and posting location. I also went to change the info title Ceremonial Colonel to Colonel in Chief, which is the official title, as Ceremonial Colonel is considered derogatory, those who hold the position are invariably ex serving officers with an official rank, Usually Brigadiers or Generals. Mind you it's not too important here as the Dukes are being merged with others on the 6th of June and the Colonel in Chief and Colonel of the Regiments positions will become redundant. However I must have done something wrong as now the position does not show at all! Sorry!! but could you take a look and correct my error?

Yes, as there is no "Colonel in Chief" parameter in the Template:Infobox Military Unit's syntax, changing "Ceremonial chief" will result in the field being omitted in an article's infobox. Hi Joel, I was hoping you could use your admin powers and do me a favour. I have tried to get a bad page move corrected through normal channels (Requested moves) without any success. First day on the Somme was moved to Battle of Albert (1914) and then cut-and-pasted back so that it can't be restored. Would you be able to fix it? Delete the current first day on the Somme (history) and move the current Battle of Albert (1914) back to first day on the Somme then revert it to a correct version prior to the move (25 February or thereabouts)? Project news An independent military history peer review has been created for the benefit of the project. A number of articles have already been reviewed, receiving significantly more feedback within the project than they did on the generic peer review page. The project's Collaboration of the Fortnight got off to a great start with Ferdinand Foch and is now focusing on the military history of Spain. Two new task forces—dealing with warfare during classical antiquity and the Middle Ages—have been created. An effort to build a catalogue of high-quality maps for use in military history articles is now underway. The newly-formed translation department is looking for volunteers to help with translating featured articles from other-language Wikipedias.	From the Coordinators Welcome to the inaugural issue of the Military history WikiProject's newsletter! We hope that this new format will help members—especially those who may be unable to keep up with some of the rapid developments that tend to occur—find new groups and programs within the project that they may wish to participate in. Please consider this inital issue to be a prototype; as always, any comments and suggestions are quite welcome, and will help us improve the newsletter in the coming months. No, I've never heatd of the "Mercia Rifles". These ips have also added this "unit" to British Army Infantry and List of British Army regiments (1994)/2008. What do you do to make the person's IP address clickable with also a talk link in brackets afterwards too? Put one bracket, two brackets, special brackets? See here. Or is it customary to copy the whole link manually like I just did now?

To generates a User + talk (and contribs) automatically, just include User| before the name, eg SoLando (talk • contribs). If you wish to sign your name with a timestamp, use four tides ~~~~ , which generates SoLando 13:03, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

In an edit summary, you don't need to adhere to such formalities, just simplify it to "rv vandalism" or "rv vandal ip", etc. As an admin, I have rollback, which automatically generates a link to the reverted user.
