Solund is a municipality in the county of Sogn og Fjordane, Norway. In the past it has been known as Utvær and Sulen.

The municipality was created by a split from Evenvik in 1858. Known as Utvær at that time, the name was changed to Sulen on 1 July 1890. Then, by Royal resolution of 16 December 1923, the name was changed from Sulen to Solund[1].

[edit] The name

The name (Norse Sólund, and Sólundir plural) originally belonged to the islands of Sula. The meaning of the name is unknown.

In Norse times the sea between Norway and Scotland was called Sólundarhaf.

[edit] Coat-of-arms

The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1990), but it is inspired by the coat-of-arms of the Middle Age noble family of Losna (island).
