Students and parents today have many exciting options in regards to the type of educational system they want their student(s) to attend. So, why choose Sohi? As the principal and also as a parent of three students (Class of 2003, Class of 2007 and Class of 2011) who have or will attend school at SOHI, I love to brag about the many opportunities that we have to offer our student body. I would like to dedicate this article to answering that critical question for all of our students and parents within the Greater Soldotna area.
Soldotna High School has a long running tradition of providing excellence to all of our students and we have a powerful award winning staff to meet the many needs of our student body. Our staff has received awards at the local, state and national level. It is also common for the State of Alaska to call upon our expertise as they develop new programs.
Our student body is truly one of our greatest assets. In the classroom our students are highly engaged and challenge each other to reach higher levels of excellence. This can range from our AP class discussions to our vocational welding classes. It is not unusual to see a group of students working with teachers or each other at lunch or after school to prepare for their tests or to get additional assistance. As you look at our assessment data both current and past, Soldotna High School students have done extremely well which is a tribute to both our students and staff.
The Soldotna High School activity program ranks among the best in the state. In our school's history we have landed State Championships in swimming, basketball, cheerleading, track, XC-Running and, most recently, football. Year in and year out, Soldotna High School Music programs have more All-State music students than even the larger schools in Anchorage, Mat-Su Valley, Fairbanks and Juneau. We tribute our success within our activity programs to our many excellent Coaches/Directors and to our All-State students who challenge each other to be the best that they can be. Even with our competitive spirit, students who just like to be part of a team also feel at home and are welcome within our activity programs. As other schools have had to cut programs, SOHI is one of the few school that has added programs (Baseball & Softball) for our student/athletes. To have a great band and/or athletic team it is critical to surround yourself with others who have the same passion. Because of that passion, it is common for many of our students to land academic scholarships and athletic scholarships. Soldotna High School currently has students taking part in sports at all three collegiate levels NAIA Division I, II and at the Division III levels. In drama, we produce two plays a year for our students to participate in.
Whether our graduating students choose to directly enter the working world, continue their education at a vocational school or elect to attend college, we are confident that we have worked hard to prepare them for their chosen path. While we are proud of all of our alumni, Soldotna High School is especially proud to have many of our former students involved in a variety of occupations right here in our community. Several of them now have children attending school and they continue to be active in various parent activities such as booster clubs and after prom/graduation programs.
Thanks to our borough, Soldotna High School is also lucky to have a building that was well designed for high school students. Spacious classrooms, a well designed vocational wing, an auditorium, four complete technology computer labs, a competitive swimming pool, an extensive home ec. room and a special services wing all help to make our students and teachers comfortable and assist with the learning process.
