Soldier's heart

Soldier's heart was a term during and after the U.S. Civil War that described the mental / emotional changes of combatants resulting from the war's horrific conditions and violence. The term preceded shell shock, battle fatigue, combat stress reaction, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
It is also the title of a book by Gary Paulsen.
