Sokushinbutsu

Sokushinbutsu were Buddhist monks or priests who fasted for years, eventually mummified themselves to death. This practice took place almost exclusively in northern Japan around the Yamagata Prefecture. Between 16 and 24 such mummifications have been discovered.
