The first classes began on the 18 of April, 1960 with 166 students.

On December 1969, Sogang became a full University consisting of Liberal Arts College with six departments, College of Science and Engineering with five departments and Commerce College with three departments. Sogang University now consists of 10 graduate schools, 7 colleges, and 24 departments, since the openning of the Psychology Department on December 2004.

[edit] University symbol

The cardinal color, which is also the university color, symbolizes love, the holy spirit, martyr, loyalty, and victory. The silver chevron comes from the first letter 'ㅅ' of 서강(Sogang), representing the intellect spirit of Sogang, and an Ivory tower. 'IHS' comes from the first letters of the Greek name Ιησους(ΙΗΣΟΥΣ) of Jesus. The medieval crown stands for the Virgin and Trinity, meaning wisdom.
