I think this article needs expanding and correction especially with respect to the last paragphs's reference to different types of IP Telephony.

DMOZ reference in external link is worthless - I didn't see any reference to Softphones in DMOZ link - why make it difficult to find websites that do provide this information. I agree that there should be no self promoting advertising as was provided in the later edits, but also think external links are useful in research and provide additional information. Recommend reverting to Seidenstud version.

If people added their links to DMOZ as readily as they added them to WP then there would be references to Softphones there. That said, I accept some external links will be useful. However the links in the Seidenstud version seem just to be a random selection of softphones. Why link to these in particular, and not to any of the other softphones out there? [edit] Removal of link to databasesystemscorp.com (Softphoneexamples.com)

I am re-removing the link to databasesystemscorp.com (listed as softphoneexamples.com). It is in violation of WP:External_links. Specifically the following from "Links normally to be avoided":

  • 1. "In general, any site that does not provide a unique resource beyond what the article here would have once it becomes an example of brilliant prose"
Anything of value that might be provided at the linked site would be much more useful as part of the article instead.
  • 2. ? "A website that you own or maintain, even if the guidelines above imply that it should be linked to" ?
I don't know if this is the case or not. But if it is, then you should be aware of the policy.
  • 3. Links that are added to promote a site, that primarily exist to sell products or services, with objectionable amounts of advertising, or ...
The link 'softphoneexamples.com' is forwarded directly to the url http://www.databasesystemscorp.com/phone-software.htm. Which is a page promoting the products of "database systems corp.", and details the features of their products. In addition to the fact that the entire page is an ad for their product(s), it includes other ads as well.
  • 4. "Generally, it is best to avoid using URL redirection sites in external links."
Clearly the link is volates this point. If the link were to be included, then only the real URL should be used, not a forwarding URL.
  • 5. "How to link" section
This link is not a citation and is not in the External Links section, but is included in the article itself. If this link were otherwise acceptable (which I don't believe it is), it would go in the External Links section.

If there is relevant information contained on the linked site, then I'd recommend you update the article to included it (without violating WP:Copyrights), and include a source citation to the real url. Otherwise, please do not add this link back unless there is a consensus on this page regarding it. kenj0418 04:44, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
