Software Testing as career in Pakistan

Software testing has been closely associated with software development until recently. Developers used to test their code and applications themselves, but due to very critical bugs in some leading software, testing has become the integral part of software engineering. Software testing as a career is evolving rapidly and the profile of a successful tester is remarkably different from that of a successful developer. As testing gains more prominence, a generic career roadmap for software testing is likely to be established in the years to come.

In Pakistan, software testing is in growing very rapidly. Almost 1000-2000 test engineers join this sector every year, but due to the lack of good training, the engineers are generally not on par with those from other countries. Due to this, these fresh graduates often make their careers in testing through their own effort. Self study and the internet helps them to improve their skills, and after 2 or 3 years' experience they reach a level where they are better able to compete with test engineers in other parts of the world.

Pakistan currently needs more training institutes in order to produce good test engineers to benefit from the boom in the IT world.

• Automation Testing, WinRunner, QTP, Silktest etc
• Load testing
• Processes, CMM, ISO, etc.
• Certifications
• Ability to work with a problem until solved
• Aptitude towards problem identification
• Ability to analyse the reason for defects
