Sofades

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sofades (Σοφάδες) is a town in Thessaly, central Greece and it belongs to the prefecture of Karditsa (Καρδίτσα). Its population is around 7.000 people, many of them Roma. The terrain level is around 120 m above sea level, and the economy is mainly agricultural (cotton, corn).

The modern town is very close to the site of the ancient city of Kierion (Κιέριον), one of the most important cities of ancient Thessaly. The name "Sofades" was first recorded as "Sofou" (Σοφού) at around 1454-5 AD. The non-Roma inhabitants of the region are known as Karagounides (Καραγκούνηδες) and they have always been speaking Greek.
