Mimodes graysoni Lawrence, 1871 |
The Socorro Mockingbird, Mimodes graysoni, is an endangered mockingbird endemic to Socorro Island in the Revillagigedo Islands. It numbers fewer than 400 individuals. The species is mostly threatened by habitat loss caused by introduced sheep. The extermination of the sheep is underway in the hope of restoring the island.
The species lives in dwarf forest above 600m, feeding on small invertebrates, the remains of crabs, and fruit. It has an extended breeding season with the peak laying occuring in March and April. Three eggs are laid, which take around 15 days to hatch.
The binomial commemorates the American ornithologist Andrew Jackson Grayson.
