Society Hill, South Carolina
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Society Hill is a town in Darlington County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 700 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Florence Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was the birthplace of Gashouse Gang member Pat Crawford.
Society Hill was also home to W. Gentry Jones, part safety director, part philosopher, widely known for his impudence and colorful take on people and life - both used largely for no other purpose but to entertain himself. Gentry grew up and attended school in Society Hill, graduating from Rosenwald High School in 1980 with a class ranking of #50 out of 52 classmates. He left Society Hill at the first opportunity and according to him "will not return except to drive through and in so doing always make sure to have enough gas to get to the next town without stopping." Having been present at two homicides before his eighteenth birthday, he is glad to be "from" Society Hill. He said the homicides along with smoking, poor driving, and a general disregard for all things reasonable mostly explain why the population has dwindled from a fat 900 in the mid 1960's to the 700 referenced in the 2000 census. Gentry is a graduate of Southern Wesleyan University in Central, South Carolina. He has a daughter, Nikki, who is now married. She and her husband Jeff are living happily in South Carolina. Mr. Jones lives with his lovely wife Rosemary and Son Sean William Edward in the beautiful state of North Carolina.
Society Hill is a well-known speed trap.
