[edit] Test Format, Scoring, and Advancement
Each test lasts for 90 minutes and consists of 45 objective multiple choice questions and an essay. The multiple choice questions focus on primary source documents from the topic, questions from the book, independent research on the topic[citation needed], and general social studies knowledge. The highest score for the objective multiple choice section is an 80 and the highest for the essay is a 20, for a total score of 100.
Students have the chance to compete both on a team and as an individual. The team score consists of the top 3 objective scores from each school for a maximum team score of 240. The top 8 individual scores on the multiple choice portion of the exam will have their essays graded. Essays do not count for team scores, but are used to determine individual standings.
The highest scoring team from each District advances to the Regional Meet, with the highest scoring second place team from the Region advancing as a "wild card" team. The top 3 scoring individuals from each District will advance to the Regional Meet. The highest scoring team from each Region will advance to the State Meet, with the highest scoring second place team in the State advancing as a "wild card" team. The top 3 scoring individuals from each Region advance to the State Meet.
