[edit] Synopsis
Life is anything but boring for the Carlson twins, Riley (Mary-Kate) and Chloe (Ashley), whose parents have amicably separated but who still live within a stone’s throw distance from each other in Malibu.
Their dad and mom ran a highly successful fashion label for years until Jake hit a mid-life crisis. In the spirit of finding himself, he moved to a trailer which overlooks his former Malibu beachfront home.
Being teens, Riley and Chloe are not immune to the trials and tribulations that come with school, family, friends and boys. While the girls’ parents keep everyone on their toes wondering whether they’ll get back together, or if they'll remain amiable friends who live to drive each other just a little crazy.
[edit] Main Characters
Chloe Carlson (played by Ashley Olsen)
- Quite the opposite of her sister, Chloe is an over-achiever, who wants to do it all. She's also very assertive and isn't afraid of letting people know how she feels.
Riley Carlson (played by Mary-Kate Olsen)
- Riley is easy going and takes most things in stride. Because she is so nice and genuine, she finds it difficult to turn people down because she doesn't want to hurt their feelings.
Macy Carlson (played by Clare Carey)
- Macy is a serious businesswoman who runs a fashion design label. She used to run the business with her husband, Jake, until the two separated. Now living apart from Jake, Macy spends her time working and raising her twin daughters.
Jake Carlson (played by Eric Lutes)
- Jake ran a successful fashion design label with his wife, until he hit a mid-life crisis. Recently separated, he is currently trying to "find" himself by living in a trailer near his former Malibu home. His easygoing lifestyle allows him to spend lots of time with Chloe and Riley.
Manuelo (played by Taylor Negron)
- Manuelo is the family's spirited and funny housekeeper, who keeps everyone grounded. He's been a part of the family ever since he was Riley and Chloe's nanny and is the best domestic in the world.
Larry Slotnick (played by Jesse Head)
- Larry lives next door to the Carlson Family. Riley is the object of his affections and Larry often looks to Chloe for help in getting her to notice him. He's a bit naive and can sometimes be clueless, but he's really a sweet guy.
Tedi (played by Natashia Williams)
- A beautiful supermodel, Tedi is vain and selfish; however, deep down she really cares about the Carlsons, who are practically family to her. She models almost all of Macy and Jake's clothes.

[edit] Books

[edit] Trivia
- Sometimes the show will end with the director saying "Cut", which makes the cast leave the studio.
- Only twenty-six episodes of the show were made and never received high ratings.
- The show was criticized for having an odd plot, an occasional laugh track and unoriginal humor.
- Sometimes the show will start with actors wandering around the set with the camera following them. They will talk about current events, such as the birthday of an actor who is on the set. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen appear on this segment mostly.
- A short behind-the-scenes featurette was sometimes included at the end of an episode. Although retained on the Warner Brothers DVD releases, these were always edited out of the UK terrestrial transmissions – presumably because it was felt that viewers were only interested in whatever Riley and Chloe got up to in each episode.
- In the UK, the show was aired on the BBC Network on the children's channel CBBC. Some episodes had a shorter running time than others because of the removal of the behind-the-scenes featurettes (see previous footnote).
