This from defence_presentation.ppt Bjørn Fredrik Davik’s doctoral dissertation ): "Ring Networks The Newhall ring (1969), a token-based ring network presented in the paper by Farmer and Newhall “An experimental distributed switching system to handle bursty computer traffic” [3]. The Pierce ring (1972): a slotted ring, allowing for uncoordinated access to the ring, proposed by Pierce in his paper “Network for block switching of data” [4]. The buffer-insertion ring (1974): an unslottet ring, allowing for uncoordinated access to the ring and use of variable sized packets. Proposed by Hafner, Nenadal and Tschanz [5]."

see: http://www.research.ibm.com/journal/sj/221/ibmsj2201a2F.pdf and from: http://www.cdk3.net/networking/Ed2/TokenRing.pdf: Token rings were explored early in the development of local network technologies [Farmer and Newhall 1969, Farber and Larson 1972, Pierce 1972] but their exploitation has been slower than that of the other local network technologies. Nevertheless, they have been used in several commercial products and IBM has adopted a token ring that conforms to the IEEE/ISO 802.5 Standard [IEEE 1985c] as a basis for distributed system products.
