Despite his twenty years of service, he was never paid for delivering the mail.

because it rings true: per History Detectives, he carried a hundred-pound pack, and was surely doing work that deserves more pay that carrying mail would. The article deserves a few words to indicate what kind of goods he was carrying and the degree of formality of his delivery service.
