A snowball is a New Orleans tradition and is similar to a snowcone. A snow cone is a paper cone filled with crushed ice topped with flavored sugar water. A snowball on the other hand is a cup or Chinese food contaner filled with shaved ice and flavored sugar water or creamed flavoring that can be topped with even more sweets. The quality of the ice is important, it should be like fine fresh snow. If it is the right consistency it will mix with the flavoring and be like an icy drink rather than a crunchy sweet.
