Snickerdoodle
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A snickerdoodle is a soft sugar cookie rolled in cinnamon sugar. It has a characteristically crackly surface, and can be crisp or soft, depending on preference. Some variants include nutmeg, raisins, chocolate chips, or nuts.
[edit] Origins
It has been speculated that "snick" may be a reference to St. Nicolas.
Alternatively, The Joy of Cooking claims that snickerdoodles are probably German in origin, and that the name is a corruption of the German word for "snail noodles" (Schneckennudeln, or cinnamon-dusted sweet rolls).
[edit] Popular Culture
- Snickerdoodles have become a catchphrase among Veronica Mars fans, since one episode features Veronica secretly baking the cookies for her best friend Wallace.
- In addition, some espresso bars feature a "snickerdoodle latte" as an occasional special. Though there is no standard recipe, the Espresso Bartender's Guide to Espresso Bartending by Sally Ann Slankard (ISBN 0-9636173-7-0), a well-known reference for baristas, defines it as a vanilla-flavored caffè latte topped with whipped cream and a dusting of cinnamon.
- In Ratchet: Deadlocked, an announcer says:
"If Ratchet were a tough cookie, what kind of cookie would he be? I'm gonna have to go with 'snickerdoodle'."
