Snaresbrook
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Snaresbrook is an area of north-east London, partly in the London Borough of Redbridge and partly in the London Borough of Waltham Forest. It was part of Essex until 1965.
The name derives from a corruption of Sayers brook, a tributary of the River Roding that flows through Wanstead to the East.
Snarebrook is bounded approximately by South Woodford to the north, the lower reaches of Epping Forest and Upper Leytonstone to the west, Leytonstone to the south and Wanstead to the east. However, Snaresbrook Ward in the London Borough of Redbridge covers most of Wanstead High Street.
Snaresbrook's most famous building is Snaresbrook Crown Court. It was opened in 1843 as an Infant Orphan Asylum by King Leopold of Belgium, and later became a school. It was designed by Gilbert Scott and William Moffat.
Snaresbrook Primary is one of the schools in Snaresbrook. It is listed on the South Woodford page since Snaresbrook doesn't possess its own postal district, being covered by parts of E11 (Leytonstone and Wanstead) and E18 (South Woodford). Snaresbrook College lies in E18, and Forest School gives its address as Snaresbrook, London although it lies in E17 (Walthamstow).
