Snaebjörn Galti was the first norwegian to navigate to Greenland in 978AD, following the accidental discovery of lands west of iceland by Gunnbjörn Ulfsson some years earlier. Eric the Red also navigated to Greenland at about the same time and established the first permanent colonies on the island.
