[edit] History
Smyrna High was founded in 1911 and split in 1988 into the current LaVergne and Smyrna High Schools. The current Smyrna Middle School was the original home of Smyrna High.
[edit] Football Team
[edit] LaVergne Rivalry
Since the school's split, LaVergne and Smyrna have held an intense athletic rivalry with LaVergne. Such rivalry appears when the opposing schools vandalize each other's football fields. However, Smyrna's football team has only lost one football game to the LaVergne football team, and the Bulldogs also went on to win state in the 2006 season.
[edit] Riverdale Rivalry
Riverdale High's football team and Smyrna's football team have held a rivalry for 18 years. Riverdale beat Smyrna in their first 17 meetings; however, Smyrna finally beat the Warriors for the first time in the Class 5A state championship quarterfinals in 2006.
[edit] 2006 State Championship Run
The Bulldogs entered the playoffs 7-2. They had won all of their games on the road and were contenders to go far into the playoffs. They wiped Coffee County out of the playoffs in the first round by beating them 47-21 at Robert L. Raikes Stadium. The next week, LaVergne once again faced Smyrna but the result remained the same as Smyrna once again beat the Wolverines 24-0. On November 17, 2006, the Bulldogs finally beat the Riverdale Warriors of Murfreesboro for the first time in 18 years by a score of 9-7 to advance to the Semi-Finals game. On November 24th, 2006, the Bulldogs advanced to their first State Finals game ever by beating the then undefeated Ootlewah Owls of Chattanooga in the Semi-Finals game by a score of 28-25. The win gave Coach Shadowens his 100th career win as Smyrna High's head coach. On December 2nd, 2006, the Smyrna Bulldogs defeated the Ravenwood Raptors of Brentwood to avenge their only other loss of the year, to win their first State Championship in school history by a score of 35-14. Rodriguez Wilks was the Offensive MVP and Josh Day was the Defensive MVP of that game.
[edit] Bowling Team
The bowling team won back-to-back State Championships in 2005 and 2006. They lost in 2007 to the eventual State Champion Hixson.
[edit] Swim Team
The Smyrna Swim Team recently won their fourth county championship. At this year's state meet, the boy's team placed 26th, with points from the state's tenth breaststroker Cameron Grey and a relay team that placed twelfth. During the 2006-2007 season, numerous records were broken. Smryna is once again undefeated in Duel Meets.
[edit] Wrestling Team
During the 2006-2007 wrestling season, Smyrna got a new coach in Chris Garner. He replaced former head coach, Mark Gonyea, who is widely considered to be the best wrestling coach in Smyrna High history. Under him, Smyrna sent 34 wrestlers to state, won the Region V championship and Region Runner-Up. During his tenure, Smyrna also captured the school's first state medal along with 4 others. Coach Gonyea also coached a wrestler to the state finals. James Turner, Chris Sholly, and Spencer Sommers all have claimed State Medals. Chris Garner coached Smyrna Middle for 3 years.
[edit] Academics
Academics is a core element of Smyrna High School's philosophy. Although sports are considered extremely important, academics (as many teachers think) are considered more important. Many Years, Smyrna High School has very good state test score.
