The smokey chromis, Chromis fumea, is a damselfish of the genus Chromis, found in the tropical waters of the eastern Indian Ocean, and the western Pacific Ocean straying to northern New Zealand, at depths of between 3 and 25 metres, off rocky or coral reef areas. Its length is between 5 and 10 cm.
The smokey chromis is a small schooling fish with a compact body and a deeply forked tail.
Coloration is yellow on the back becoming almost white on the belly, and has a small white spot on the upper caudal peduncle and a dark brown stripe running along each lobe of the tail fin.
The smokey chromis is a plankton feeder but tends to stay closer to the bottom than other demoiselles.
