Smokey was a drug dealer working for supplier Big Worm (Faizon Love). He and his friend Craig (Ice Cube), spent a friday afternoon together and Smokey got him to smoke the marijuana that he was supposed to be selling for Worm. Later in the day, Big Worm paid a visit to the boys' neighborhood. Smokey told him that they smoked up all of his weed, even though Smokey smoked more than Craig did. Big Worm then threatened Smokey, saying if they didn't pay him the money they owed him by 10 PM, he would kill both of them. So Craig and Smokey make up strategies to see how they can come up with the money. Craig asked his mother (Anna Maria Horsford) and sister (Regina King) and they both turn him down. Craig's father (John Witherspoon), finds out about the threat Big Worm sent Smokey and he kicked Smokey out of the house, but Craig followed him. They go outside and see a van, which contains Big Worm's friends, who have machine guns, and are firing them at Craig and Smokey. Craig fires back with a pistol but misses. To avoid the gang, the boys then hid in a truck. On their way back to the neighborhood, Deebo (Tom Lister, Jr., has beat up Debbie (Nia Long)'s sister in a display of domestic violence. Debbie gets real heated over it and he slaps Debbie for the comments she assulted him with. Then Craig comes and pushes Deebo, and they fight. Craig ends up winning and the neighborhood is happy. The film ends with Smokey in his room talking to Big Worm on the telephone talking about the events that occurred on that day. Smokey finally told Big Worm he going to rehab. Then lights up a joint and says: "I was just bullshittin', and you know this......MAN!"

In the sequel, Next Friday, Ice Cube explains Smokey's absence by saying he went to rehab.
