Smoke (band)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Smoke was a widely acclaimed band from the Cabbagetown neighborhood of Atlanta, Georgia which dissolved in 1999 with the death of writer/singer Benjamin. Benjamin is the subject of Peter Sillen Jem Cohen's film Benjamin Smoke (2000). The group formed during the demise of the Opal Foxx Quartet, starting with Benjamin, Bill Taft, Brian Halloran, and Todd Butler. Coleman Lewis and Tim Campion later joined, followed by Will Fratesi. Their last tour was with Cat Power through the west coast, though Bill Taft did not take part (the final lineup including Benjamin, Lewis, Halloran and Fratesi, as witnessed by Luther Gooch of Jetbunny magazine in Baton Rouge, Louisiana). Their last show was New Year's eve, 1998. Benjamin died January 29, 1999. Benjamin's real name was Robert Dickerson.
Though the band's cd's are apparently out of print, some copies may be currently available at online record stores.
Bill Taft and Will Fratesi went on to form Hubcap City, who are still active in the Atlanta area.
